This intermediate-level web class series has been designed to support residential property professionals in understanding and applying the RICS Service charge residential management code and additional advice for landlords, leaseholders and agents, 4th edition.
Across three practical sessions, learners will explore the key changes introduced by the updated professional standard, how the new expectations apply in practice, and the common risks and disputes associated with residential service charge management.
The series combines expert explanation, practical examples, case studies, knowledge checks, and a final assessment to help learners build confidence and apply the standard consistently in day-to-day practice.
Explain the purpose, scope and intended application of the RICS Service Charge Residential Management Code, 4th edition
Identify the key changes between the 3rd and 4th editions, particularly regarding transparency, governance and professional expectations
Apply the principles of the professional standard to basic residential service charge scenarios, including budgeting, financial management and reserve fund planning
Describe appropriate methods for issuing service charge demands, financial reporting and effective communication with leaseholders
Recognise common risks, causes of dispute and areas of potential non-compliance associated with poor service charge management
Describe how the professional standard is applied in tribunal and dispute contexts, and the potential professional and legal consequences of non-compliance
Apply best-practice approaches to promote transparency, reduce the likelihood of disputes and support informed operational decision-making
Align the updated standard with the wider legislative and regulatory framework governing residential property management
Antony Parkinson has over 25 years of residential property experience spanning supported and social housing, block management, residential survey and valuation and property standards. In his previous role as Senior Specialist in Property Standards at RICS, Antony led on some key industry standards and projects including the Service Charge Residential Management Code and the Residential Retrofit Standard. He also serves as a fee paid Valuer Chair of the First Tier Tribunal. Antony holds MRICS and FTPI qualifications and is a RICS Registered Valuer and RICS Accredited Mediator.
