As the use of AI in surveying continues to grow, so does the need for clear guidance on how professional judgement should be applied to AI-assisted work.
Our new insight paper provides a practical framework for how a surveyor's professional judgement can be applied to AI-assisted work while maintaining accountability and trust.
“The surveyor’s signature has always been the point at which information becomes professional advice. AI changes what precedes the signature, but not what the signature means. The judgement layer helps surveyors gather and evaluate evidence, helps solution providers design AI systems around the points where professional judgement is applied, and provides a practical framework for applying RICS’ Responsible use of AI professional standard.”

Head of Sustainability, RICS
The paper builds on our Responsible use of AI in surveying practice professional standard, which provides a baseline for how the technology can be used across the profession. It also develops themes explored in our previous article on how AI can be used to elevate professional judgment.

In this paper, we introduce the surveyor's judgement layer: a practical framework that helps surveyors distinguish AI-generated outputs from professional advice, and determine when, how and to what extent those outputs can be relied upon.
Written for surveyors, firms, educators and other professional stakeholders, the paper examines how accountability, decision-making and professional practice are evolving in an AI-enabled profession.
In doing so, it reinforces the importance of professional judgement – the ability to provide informed decisions, analyses and evaluations using your knowledge, skills, experience and professional scepticism – while applying relevant standards, guidance, laws and principles in the best interests of clients and the wider public.
In August, we released our AI in commercial property and construction report 2026, which brought together insights from over 3,100 RICS members, regulated firms and other professionals from across the two practice areas. The report found that while AI adoption is increasing, many organisations still struggle to move beyond pilot projects and scale its use across their business.
To help members and regulated firms understand and use AI responsibly and effectively, we offer a range of training and CPD opportunities covering both the technology and the professional standards and guidance that support its use. Check what training is available and how you could improve your knowledge of the technology here.
Later this year, we are also hosting our first Tech and AI Summit, bringing together leading voices from around the sector to explore both the opportunities and the realities of implementing technology across real-world assets and portfolios. Find out more here.
