Overview

As Hong Kong advances its intellectual property (IP) financing ecosystem, the launch of the Pilot Patent Valuation Support Scheme marks an important step in supporting IP valuation and financing.

Join RICS for an insightful seminar featuring representatives from the Intellectual Property Department (IPD) and Kroll, a global financial and risk advisory firm, bringing together policy developments, practical valuation considerations and international market perspectives on IP valuation and financing.

  • Derek Lau, Assistant Director of Intellectual Property, IPD
  • Priscilla Cheng MRICS, Managing Director, Valuation Advisory Services, Kroll
  • Kevin Leung, Managing Director, Valuation Advisory Services, Kroll

Session 1: Pilot Patent Valuation Support Scheme – IPD and Kroll dialogue

Through an interactive discussion, representatives from IPD and Kroll will explore the key aspects of the Pilot Patent Valuation Support Scheme, including:

  • an overview of the Scheme and its objectives
  • requirements and procedures for valuers participating in the Scheme
  • valuation reporting requirements and practical considerations
  • the use of Patent Evaluation Reports issued by the Hong Kong Technology and Innovation Support Centre (HKTISC)

Session 2: Practical insights on patent valuation for debt financing – Kroll

For the second half of the seminar, Kroll Valuation Advisory Services Managing Directors Ms. Priscilla Cheng MRICS and Mr. Kevin Leung will share practical insights on patent valuation for debt financing, covering:

  • Patent filing trends and implications for valuers: key global and regional patent filing dynamics, and what shifting filing volumes and quality indicators mean for appraisal methodologies.
  • Good practices in IP valuation for lending purposes: defendable execution procedures, robust assumptions, and compliance with International Valuation Standards when valuing patents as loan collateral.
  • Practical considerations: real estate vs. IP valuation: distinct operational challenges separating intangible assets from traditional real property, focusing on liquidity, asset lifespans, enforceability and collateral risk.
  • International IP financing case studies: empirical lessons drawn from global success and failure stories, examining recovery outcomes and the role of contracted liquidity mechanisms.

The seminar will conclude with a networking session, offering participants an opportunity to connect and exchange insights with industry professionals.
