Overview

The first presentation will focus on the latest developments in the intellectual property and business valuation landscape, with particular reference to the new government measures highlighted in the recent policy address.

The second presentation will present on how specialised IP valuation links intangible assets to capital markets. It will examine income approach methods, including the Relief-from-Royalty method and the Multi-Period Excess Earnings Method, and highlight the challenges of isolating IP-driven cash flows and determining appropriate discount rates for startups. The discussion will be illustrated using PRC lending models, with insights drawn from Mainland China’s established IP pledge frameworks.

Before joining the Intellectual Property Department (IPD), Derek Lau had worked in private practice in IP area for over 10 years. He has all-rounded IP practice experience and passed the Qualification Examination for China Patent Agents. Derek Lau had been involved in the implementation of the Original Grant Patent system and “patent box” regime in Hong Kong. Currently, Derek Lau leads the Advisory Team in providing civil legal advisory service on IP matters to government bureaus and departments, oversees the international and regional cooperation in the IP area, and carries out the initiatives related to IP trading and IP financing.

Kenneth Ma MRICS

Managing Director, MOORE

Kenneth Ma is the Managing Director of Transaction Services at Moore Hong Kong. He performs valuation and financial due diligence for merger & acquisitions, financial reporting, litigation and internal references. Kenneth and his team assist clients in determining the right prices they should pay for their investments and supporting board decisions on accepting or rejecting investment options. Kenneth is also a fan of horses and now is currently studying MSc Equine at the University of Edinburgh. Kenneth been performing valuation and due diligence for over 10 years. He holds a CFA Charter and a CAIA Charter and is a member of the RICS.

Calvin Wong

Transaction Services Principal, MOORE

Calvin Wong is the Principal of Transaction Services at Moore Hong Kong. He has over 10 years of professional experience in valuation and financial services industry. His expertise spans various applications, including financial reporting, fund raising, mergers and acquisitions, public documentation and litigation support. Calvin has conducted valuations across a variety of businesses, financial instruments, intangible assets and fixed assets. His work covers a broad spectrum of industries, including technology, manufacturing, financial services, and cryptocurrencies. Calvin is a charter holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and holds a Master of Investment Management from Bayes Business School at City, University of London.
