Overview
As regulations and expectations around inclusive design evolve, building surveyors play a critical role in ensuring that the built environment is accessible to all. This webinar provides RICS members with up-to-date, practical guidance on identifying, assessing, and improving accessibility in both existing and new buildings. Attendees will gain insight into key UK&I legislative frameworks, common accessibility pitfalls, and real-world examples of inclusive design solutions. Whether working in residential, commercial, or public sectors, this session will help surveyors promote environments that are not only compliant, but truly inclusive.
Learning outcomes
Understand the key legal and regulatory requirements for accessibility in the UK and Ireland, including relevant parts of the Equality Act 2010 and building regulations (e.g., Part M, Technical Guidance Document M).
Identify common barriers to accessibility in existing and new buildings, with a focus on practical challenges faced by surveyors during inspections and refurbishments.
Apply inclusive design principles to ensure environments are usable by people of all ages and abilities, beyond mere compliance.
Assess and advise on reasonable adjustments and practical interventions to improve accessibility in commercial, residential, and public sector buildings.
Recognise the surveyor's professional responsibilities in promoting and ensuring accessibility, and how to communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders about accessibility improvements.
