Overview

Building surveying is one of the largest areas of the surveying practice, and covers a wide range of professional roles. This APC Acceleration course has been designed to evolve the technical skills and knowledge required to become a Chartered Building Surveyor.

This membership acceleration course has been designed to evolve technical skills and knowledge needed for professionals who work in building surveying and covers professional ethics and core competencies defined in the RICS pathway guide.

In addition, the course will support professionals throughout the membership assessment process and activities. Delegates will receive feedback and support from a RICS Assessor, simplifying the process and preparation for their final assessment to become chartered.

With access to our industry-leading online library isurv included (Building Surveying channel only), delegates will be able to access a wealth of information to support their learning

Structure

This course will be delivered as an online learning course which includes a blend of technical modules, membership masterclasses and consolidation sessions. Each module will take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete. The consolidation sessions will review the module content, provide further context and practical application.

The membership masterclasses will focus on all key activities of the membership assessment process. There is an end of course assessment and separate Professional Ethics for RICS Members assessment too

  • 1 - Course introduction

    • The role of the RICS and its professionals
    • Introduction to the real estate lifecycle
    • Understanding the APC

     

    2 - Construction technology and environmental services

    • The stages of design and construction from inception to completion
    • The process of construction and alteration
    • Building works and how they relate into different property structures
    • The impact different regulations and standards have on building surveying 

     

    3 - Design and specification

    • Review the various stages of the design process
    • The functional requirements and performance of building materials and components
    • The requirements of a client’s brief, in order to satisfy their requirements
    • Prepare designs and specifications, including at outline and detail levels

     

    4 – Inspection

    • The requirements of the differing types of inspections
    • Methods of completing property inspections
    • Apply different techniques of inspection for different properties
    • Apply the information gained to prepare reports for the purpose of an inspection

     

    5 – Building Pathology

    • Identify in detail cause and mechanics of varying types of failure
      Building defects likely to be encountered in typical building surveying activities
      Review the causes of failure, and the likely results of failure, together with recommendations of appropriate remedial measures

     

    6 - Contract administration

    • Implement administrative procedures necessary for the smooth running of a construction contract
    • The roles and responsibilities of the contract administrator
    • The requirements to creating a building contract

     

    7 - Legal/regulatory compliance

    • Comply with legal/regulatory requirements for surveying
    • Health and Safety in relation to building surveying regulations and guidance
    • Statutory control of Building Works, including Building and Planning Acts within the country of practice

End of course assessments

Delegates are assessed through an online multiple-choice question examination which takes place in the final quarter of the 12-month programme. There’s also an online test to conclude the Professional Ethics for RICS Members to assess delegates understanding of the subject.

N.B. Completion of these assessments and course will not guarantee receiving RICS membership qualification, this will depend on the result of the final APC assessment.
