Engaging with the Australian local government sector

It was a privilege for RICS to be able to take part in the recent Australian Local Government Association’s Local Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Congress on 24–26 August.

The local government sector is responsible for the provision and maintenance of significant amounts of vertical and horizontal infrastructure in Australia, and relies upon the expertise of RICS professionals throughout the construction process.

The conference provided an important opportunity to connect with council leaders and infrastructure managers from across Australia. It also enabled RICS to showcase its role as the leading professional body for chartered surveyors, both internationally and in Australia, and to highlight the substantial expertise of our members across key areas including quantity surveying, cost management, asset management, valuation and project management.

Discussions focused on the most crucial challenges facing local government, including constrained budgets, skills shortages, rising construction costs, ageing assets and the need to deliver resilient infrastructure that provides long-term value for communities.

Engagement with the local government sector remains an important part of RICS’ work in Australia, ensuring the capabilities of RICS members are understood and helping strengthen relationships with organisations responsible for delivering critical local infrastructure.
