Chaired by Chris Sullivan from Hollis, this event showcases leading experts giving high-level perspectives on key valuation, technical and legal topics every dilapidations professional should know about. It will provide you with a unique opportunity to understand legal essentials, refresh your practical knowledge and understand dilapidations from various jurisdictions and sectors.

This year will feature several interactive and demonstrative sessions to showcase best practice. These include a mock mediation, where a case is re-enacted by solicitors, mediators, building surveyors and clients. Several panels will debate and discuss common challenges faced, as well as provide a broader  perspective on the future of commercially leased premises, both in the UK and globally.

Breakout sessions once again offer you the chance to tailor your agenda to best suit your specific areas of interest. Choose between common dilapidation issues faced by valuers or a technical update on mechanical and engineering, statutory compliance and technical due diligence.

  • Opening keynote: Recent changes in the courts - The judiciary perspective
    Gain insight from a lead judge’s view on dilapidations claims, including recent changes in the courts and how dilapidations claims are progressing. Understand what kind of evidence is expected from you as a dilapidations professional preparing for a court case.
  • International jurisdictions
    How could we improve the way we go about dilapidations claims? Are inclusive rents better? Alison Hardy (Ashurst LLP) will explore how dilapidation claims are handled elsewhere in the world and discuss learnings you could use in your own practice.
  • Difficult issues for the valuer
    Simon Crust (ProMission), Tony Guthrie (GeraldEve) and Nicholas Dowding QC, (Malcolm Hollis) will use a series of case studies to tackle the common problems faced by valuers, including sub-tenancies, obsolete properties and disputes on scope and cost. This will lead into a panel discussion, giving you both the legal and valuation perspectives on the topic.
  • Technical updates for dilapidations professionals
    Receive the latest mechanical and engineering update, including practical guidance and key things to consider in your practice. This year includes the impact of statutory compliance, including EPCs and electrical fittings.
  • Technical Due Diligence paper
    David Mann (TFT) will give an overview of the latest RICS guidance note on Technical Due Diligence, which is essential for building surveyors to ensure best practice and avoid getting sued from disappointed clients.
  • Mediation skills for dilapidations professionals
    This practical session will give you crucial mediation skills to have those difficult conversations, artfully negotiate and solve conflicts in your daily practice.
  • Afternoon panel discussion
    Two barristers, including Janet Bignell QC (Falcon Chambers) will look at common legal issues and how best to deal with difficulties during a claim.
  • Afternoon panel debate: What is the future of leased commercial premises in the UK?
    Brexit deal or no deal, dilapidations will continue to feature in commercial premises.So whatare the external factors that may influence the dilapidations market? What are the pros and cons of traditional leases vs flexible leases? What do client’s want? This panel will debate the future of leased commercial premises, including the retail and office market perspectives
  • Mock mediation
    This interactive session will bring a case to life, looking at key issues that present themselves during mediation. Two barristers, Saleem Fazal (Taylor Wessing LLP) and Kate Andrews (Hamlins LLP), a building surveyor, valuer and other speakers from the day playing the ‘clients’, will demonstrate best practice in this lively closing session.
