This session explores how Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) using timber can deliver high-quality, sustainable, and efficient learning environments tailored to the needs of SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) provision.
Through a combination of technical insight, biophilic design principles, and practical delivery experience, the session demonstrates how timber MMC solutions can achieve excellence in both educational outcomes and environmental performance. Participants will first classify and map the range of timber MMC options — such as cross-laminated timber (CLT), glulam, and panelised systems — understanding their suitability for different SEND project typologies. The session will then examine how MMC supports programme certainty, reduces prelim costs, and minimises disruption on live school sites. A focus on biophilic design principles highlights the proven benefits of natural materials, daylight, and acoustic comfort which combine to in create calm, supportive environments for SEND learners. Finally, the discussion turns to standardisation and scalability, exploring how repeatable design solutions can drive both commercial efficiency and significant carbon reductions, supported by data and case study evidence. By the end of the session, delegates will have gained a clear understanding of how timber MMC can be strategically applied to deliver cost-effective, sustainable, and nurturing SEND environments.
