My Way: Adeline Liew

If you had told Adeline Liew that she would have a career in real estate several years ago, she probably wouldn't have believed you. Nevertheless, she is now an award-winning industry professional with a passion for helping others achieve their dreams.

The beginning

Life has a funny way of taking you on a journey when you least expect it. Coming from a biomedical science background, the last thing I expected was to enter the real-estate arena — much less make an impact in it.

In the early part of my career, I worked in different roles across diverse sectors — I was an account manager at Coal Creative Consultants, a senior business development manager at Futuristic Store Fixtures, and a market knowledge manager at Procter & Gamble. Each role was a valuable learning experience in its own right, but it was when I received a call from a headhunter that my journey truly began.

The breakthrough

The headhunter's first words to me were, "If you are looking to make an environmental impact, join Interface — they are leaders in sustainability." Sure enough, when I researched the company, I was surprised and impressed by their work. Interface had been involved in the circular economy and sustainability since the 1990s, when no one really took it seriously. I joined Interface and quickly started developing relationships with key accounts and stakeholders.

I was elected Young Leader Chairperson for CoreNet's Singapore Chapter in 2018 and, shortly after, joined the Global Board for Young Leaders at CoreNet Global. Still new to the world of real estate, these roles came as a surprise. Around the same time, Interface identified me as having "high potential", and I was given the Inspire Others Award at one of our global sales conferences in the US.

These achievements were both inspirational and a little overwhelming. To this day, they drive me to make an impact, and have been an undeniable motivator throughout my master's degree in corporate real estate, which I completed in 2018.

The present

As Global Account Manager for APAC at Interface, I oversee projects across the Asia-Pacific region for major technology companies and banking institutions. I am the custodian of global contracts that Interface has with these global clients and drive initiatives that take our partnerships further. This involves managing senior stakeholders and leading quarterly and yearly business reviews.

As Young Leader Chairperson, I also organise a number of speed-mentoring sessions, which empower young professionals and help them learn from senior leaders. I strongly believe in cross-pollination and mentorship, and take time out to volunteer at shelters and participate in programmes that help educate children.

Being shortlisted for the Property, Infrastructure and Construction category at the Women of the Future Awards Southeast Asia is an opportunity to inspire other women to never give up on themselves and to follow their dreams through to completion.

The Awards are a platform for women across the region to support, collaborate with, and empower one another. I hope that our stories will inspire them to do so.

The future

I plan to set up a not-for-profit organisation in the next 10 years that will build schools in impoverished countries across Southeast Asia. Education brings people out of poverty and it is my dream to make this a reality for the people who need it most.

I am excited to be part of corporate real estate's digital transformation as well. Many organisations like Interface are embracing change, which gives us the opportunity to play a part in the amalgamation of technology and real estate. I believe this merger will improve many of our archaic processes and bring about a brighter future — not just for us, but for generations to come.
