In Australia, Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste presents a significant proportion of industrial solid waste going to landfill. Although C&D waste has received increasing attention from industry practitioners and researchers since the early 1980s, current studies imply that waste management in the construction industry is still in its early stages and yet to mature to effectively alleviate the environmental burden. This paper addresses the issue and identifies the typical factors that influence construction waste management from three perspectives - organisation, process and people.
The research approach was exploratory and qualitative in nature and used primary data from interviews undertaken as focus group meetings. The purposive sample of stakeholders (n=19) operating within the C&D waste stream generated a compelling dialogue of their current perspectives of C&D waste management in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
The effective reduction of C&D wasteis a challenging issue faced by many economies around the world as well as in NSW. This paper reveals the factors underlying the waste management process on construction sites which will be beneficial to managers working in construction across the globe.
