Making a move into the construction profession in Switzerland

RICS

RICS in Switzerland continues to grow and the most recently qualified new members illustrate the range of RICS member’s expertise in the country.

For many years, we’ve seen only a few construction professionals qualifying in Switzerland but this year, Jason Shannon, a QS working on Biogen’s new, next-generation biologics manufacturing facility in Luterbach near Solothurn qualified and we have several other staff working on this 1bn CHF project interested in the RICS qualification. Most are non-Swiss, travelling the world from project to project.

I believe having the MRICS was invaluable to me where ever I went overseas (Middle East, UK, Israel, Belgium, Finland). I went to the US for a few years soon after graduating in 1996 and the "RICS QS" was practically unknown. Now it is thriving with many US Contractors and Blue Chip owners seeking out such candidates. Switzerland could be a similar story and I see great potential for the QS community led by RICS.

Our other new members were mostly drawn from our traditionally strong sectors of valuation and property finance & investment. Commercial real estate and residential real estate also featured as did planning and development.

Choosing to be assessed in English, alongside the normal option of German or French was also popular this year, illustrating how international the real estate and construction sectors are in Switzerland.

Finally, it was good to see so many new members from RICS regulated firms, further strengthening the links between RICS and those companies and ensuring the highest quality of service offered to the clients of those firms.  Equally it was good to see two new members running their own small businesses, seeing the RICS qualification as important to their credibility in the sectors in which they operate.

In addition to the final assessment successes, we welcome Louise Motta who joined us via a direct entry process. Her qualification with the Australian Property Institute is considered equivalent to RICS, so her route to RICS membership was simplified.

The following new members will receive their diplomas at the diploma ceremony on 18 September:

  • Christoph Axmann –Wüest Partner AG – Valuation
  • Sergio Coluccia – Stone Estate.Swiss AG – Valuation
  • Anne-Lorraine de Malliard – Arab Bank Switzerland Ltd – Property Finance & Investment
  • Marek Dobias – Zurich Invest AG Real Estate - Commercial Real Estate

How are the latest trends impacting surveying?

It’s easy to assess what we do today, or what we did in the past. Trying to plan for the future is a much more daunting prospect.
