Challenges affecting the installation of heating in residential buildings

District Heating is highly prominent in its potential to provide low carbon heating supply to UK residential buildings. This has provided the impetus to further investigate the practicalities of implementing District Heating on UK residential schemes. This research sought to review industry opinion and identify the prevalent challenges affecting the implementation of District Heating and how these can be overcome.

Carbon reduction represents a clear international and global priority. Consequently, there is increased pressure throughout the construction industry to establish and implement genuine low carbon solutions for new residential buildings within the UK. This is evident from current industry statistics which identify that residential buildings are producing 27% of the UK carbon emissions.

A comparison of the evidence found in the existing literature and the views of ten leading industry professionals is provided. The findings reveal there are many challenges facing the implementation of District Heating in residential buildings including from government policy, flexibility for users, cost, improving the energy efficiency of buildings and reducing C02 emissions. However, in order to promote the uptake of District Heating schemes there is a need to create incentives to incorporate the required infrastructure.

It is clear from the findings that the implementation of District Heating provides an efficient heating method leading to real economic benefits that will help the UK achieve its C02 targets. Albeit to reap the full benefits of District Heating the route to total implementation will need to be gradual and requires a long-term shift in industry mind set and commitment from all involved.
