Mr Lau will serve a one-year term from December 2019, before moving into the President-Elect role in 2020 and assuming the Presidency from late 2021. The Presidential team is elected by RICS' Governing Council and only MRICS or FRICS-accredited professionals are eligible for the positions.
"For over 150 years, RICS professionals have been valuing, managing, and building the world around us. Now, more than ever, clients need our expertise," says Mr Lau.
"Global population growth is placing huge pressure on our cities and rural communities. We need more affordable homes, modern healthcare and educational facilities, and better workplaces. Trillions needs to be spent on infrastructure, building new networks and replacing aging assets.
"Critically, we must find a way to do this all sustainably, managing our natural resources well and reducing the built environment's impact on the environment.
"I firmly believe that RICS' mission to promote the highest technical and ethical standards will make all of this possible. Throughout my career, I've seen the benefit of having a trusted, independent, global professional body, and I'm excited about what we'll achieve in the future.
"I'm particularly looking forward to supporting RICS' work to ensure it remains fit for purpose in a digital age and promoting our thought leadership on the big issues facing the built and natural environments."
RICS 2018-2019 President Chris Brooke says the Institution is thrilled to have someone of Mr Lau's caliber join its leadership ranks.
RICS is a truly global body with professionals in over 130 countries, so it's vital our leadership team reflects our international reach. Clement will be initially be working alongside our next two Presidents, UK-based Tim Neal and Kath Fontana,
Clement is highly regarded in his home market of Hong Kong and brings a depth of experience across a range of disciplines. Our professionals should feel confident that they have outstanding advocates in their next three Presidents.
