An update from the Regional Engagement Groups

The chairs of the Regional Engagement Groups across Australia update us on their discussions and remind you how you can participate.

The Regional Engagement Groups are your way to feedback key issues and opportunities in the market for RICS. They are your local professional representatives, offering market insight, supporting events, acting as a test bed for ideas to develop RICS, and providing feedback for areas of improvement.

New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory

Robert McIntosh FRICS, Chair of the NSW/ACT Regional Engagement Group and Executive Director – Valuations and Advisory Services, CBRE

"It’s been a pleasure to lead the NSW/ACT Regional Engagement Group over the past few months as we’ve worked to support the Australasian business plan from within the states.

"This has included offering up suggestions to grow the sample size and awareness of the RICS Commercial Property Monitor, supporting local RICS events, and better working with our accredited universities.

"We’ve also been considering how our more experienced chartered surveyors can support the younger membership and APC candidates in their careers. This works the other way too; as disruption continues to affect our industry, how can younger professionals support those further along their career path?"

The NSW/ACT group would like to invite you to meet us at the Sydney Christmas function on 13 December.

Paul Robbins MRICS, Chair of the QLD/NT Regional Engagement Group and National Commercial Director, LMW

"We have focused our attention as a group on a few key areas we believe will make a big difference to RICS and the membership in QLD/NT. From increasing the impact of thought leadership and market surveys, to what we can deliver to make a difference to people on the ground.

"In the latter category, we’ve been developing ideas for site visits integrating technical learning and smaller training events to help people meet their CPD hours through RICS.

"We are also looking to build on the momentum of the successful 'Safer Buildings for Queensland' training event, where we collaborated with the government to deliver fire safety training to 120 professionals.

"There are many ways that we, as professionals, can advocate to increase RICS’ visibility in the region."

The QLD/NT group would like to invite you to meet us at the Brisbane Christmas function on 29 November.

Victoria and Tasmania

Greg Sugars FRICS, Chair of the VIC/TAS Regional Engagement Group and National Director and CEO, PRP

"Articulating the positive direction RICS is moving in hasn’t been without its challenges in VIC/TAS, but with the assistance of the group, we’re making progress.

"In general, discussions have been focused on telling a positive story to the market — how we celebrate the successes of fellow professionals and grow the body of case studies to demonstrate good practice and professionalism.

"We have also been working to support local events and discussing options for chartered surveyors to better support each other in market."

The VIC/TAS group would like to invite you to meet us at the Melbourne Christmas function on 4 December.

Sheilagh Knowles MRICS, Chair of the WA/SA Regional Engagement Group and Director, Turner & Townsend

"In WA/SA, due to the distance from the Sydney office, the membership can feel distant from RICS’ work in Australia.

"This has been the frame for many of the discussions in the group. We’re exploring how we can connect site visit ideas with technical learning to support chartered surveyors with their continued learning and development.

"We're also focused on how to re-engage with accredited university partners to ensure a steady stream of students onto the APC."

The WA/SA group would like to invite you to meet us at the Perth Christmas function on 30 November.
