Regional Engagement Groups: Mid-year update

The chairs of the Regional Engagement Groups across Australia update us on their discussions and remind you how you can participate.

The Regional Engagement Groups are your way to feedback key issues and opportunities in the market for RICS. They are your local professional representatives, offering market insight, supporting events, acting as a test bed for ideas to develop RICS, and providing feedback for areas of improvement.

New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory

Robert McIntosh FRICS, Chair of the NSW/ACT Regional Engagement Group and Executive Director – Valuations and Advisory Services, CBRE

“In our latest meeting, the primary focus of the group was on a revised approach to delivering local events. The groups across the country are now being empowered to deliver local events, based on areas of interest for the membership in the particular State. If you have any event ideas, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

“We also discussed how we can support the larger events this year, including the Building Confidence conference – this is an exciting opportunity for RICS to convene the industry to enhance public trust across the spectrum of the built and natural environment. We'll also be celebrating 150 years of RICS with a gala dinner following the conference. Earning 8 hours of CPD in one day is also a great additional benefit.

“I encourage all RICS members to get in touch with me or the NSW/ACT Regional Engagement Group to feedback any ideas or concerns in the market.”

Queensland and Northern Territory

Paul Robbins MRICS, Chair of the QLD/NT Regional Engagement Group and National Commercial Director, LMW

“The group is excited to have more of a say in delivering local events in-market. We’re particularly keen to follow up on the success of the Safer Buildings for Queensland training, which occurred in October last year, and confirm site tours for later in 2019.

“We’re also enjoying connecting with RICS on areas of strategic importance, including Firms Regulated by RICS and engagement with other professional bodies in the market.

“The group is always keen to hear from professionals in the market about concerns or ideas. Please do get in touch if you’d like to feed back.”

Victoria and Tasmania

Greg Sugars FRICS, Chair of the VIC/TAS Regional Engagement Group and National Director and CEO, PRP

“The Regional Engagement Group are focused on the opportunity to deliver events in the States – supporting more ongoing engagement throughout the year. However, we’re also delighted that the RICS Awards Australia will once again be held in Melbourne in 2019 – it’s great for Victoria to hold RICS’ biggest networking event of the year.

“The group also discussed the recent comment piece from RICS about Opal Tower. We’re keen to see more pieces like this, informing stakeholders but also demonstrating the good work going on behind the scenes.

“Finally, we’re working to have more pro-active engagements with Universities around Victoria. For instance, I’m looking forward to speaking to Deakin University students in March about the value of RICS.

“Please don’t hesitate to get in touch to provide feedback or ideas to the group.”

Sheilagh Knowles MRICS, Chair of the WA/SA Regional Engagement Group and Director, Turner & Townsend

“The group in WA/SA have grasped with both hands the opportunity to deliver local events for the membership. We’re excited to reveal what we have in the pipeline very soon, but are also keen to hear any ideas you may have. The Engagement Group has also been developing a couple of ideas for site tours in the market.

“University engagement remains top of our priority list – I’m delighted that three members of the engagement group presented to students at Curtin University about the value of RICS this month.

“As always, we’re keen to hear from professionals in WA/SA with ideas, concerns or feedback. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”
