RICS

To ensure a consistent global approach on a critical issue, RICS is one of a coalition of organisations that is working to establish International Fire Safety Standards.

Gary Strong details the important work that this coalition has been doing, and in another article looks at the value of installing or retrofitting sprinklers in all buildings. In a similar vein, Simon Sandland-Taylor highlights some of the most significant changes to guidance made in BSI’s revised standard on fire detection and alarm systems for buildings.

Elsewhere, Sarah Spiers tells the inspiring story of Michael Wright’s pioneering work in Hong Kong public housing, which has seen him identified as one of the outstanding surveyors of the past 150 years by RICS’ Pride in the Profession initiative. Neil Smith also details how modern methods of construction can be brought to market and help address both housing and skills shortages while, in the first in a series of regular updates, Mimi de Paiva Kynch provides her insights on the Assessment of Professional Competence as she progresses through the process.

As always, I welcome your thoughts and ideas about the sector and the journal itself, so please do get in touch with me.
