Over 35 of the South East’s most impressive and community beneficial property schemes battled it out for top honours at last night’s 2018 RICS Awards, South East where the Command of the Oceans Project took the overall, esteemed Project of the Year title.
Held at the Kassam Stadium in Oxford on 9 May, the annual RICS Awards, South East celebrate inspirational initiatives in the region’s land, property and construction sectors across eight category awards.
The winners of the seven individual categories, announced by television presenter Fred Dineage in front of local property professionals, are:
The highly acclaimed South East Project of the Year accolade is presented to the category winner that demonstrates overall outstanding best practice and an exemplary commitment to adding value to its local area.
The title went to Command of the Oceans project, which also scooped the Tourism & Leisure accolade on the night. Robert Dollin & Co's surveying, Baynes and Mitchell Architects' and WW Martin Ltd's project comprises a new exhibition telling the story of Chatham Dockyard through the age of sail, accommodated within the redundant Grade I Listed Mast House buildings. The catalyst was the discovery of the remains of an 18th century warship, built at Chatham, under the adjoining Grade II Listed Wheelwrights shop. The project also included adapting this building for public display of the warship and linking this via a new build reception, to form the main entrance for the Dockyard. This project enhances the Dockyard as a world class visitor attraction.
RICS judges praised the team behind the Command of the Oceans project for creating a stand-out Project of the Year winner to enhance tourism and leisure in the South East.
The judges were also impressed with the project team’s commitment to ensure sustainability and environmental benefits remained at the forefront of the project.
All category winners will go on to compete against other regional winners at the national RICS Awards Grand Final on 2 November 2018 at The Brewery in London, for the chance to be crowned the overall UK winner in their respective category.
