The built environment is growing fast – but the skills that support this growth are in short supply.

In this talent-focused edition of Modus, we lead with a special report investigating how the problem is affecting three sectors in particular, and look at how the profession can respond:

  • The UK has had an ongoing issue with a shortage of skilled construction workers for a number of years now. The industry recognises that more can be done to improve training, innovation and diversity for there to be a real breakthrough, but how badly would a hard Brexit damage these efforts?
  • Much has been made of proptech's potential to revolutionise the industry's working practices, but what impact will that actually have on professionals' day-to-day roles? Will they need to develop more tech skills, or learn how to be more client-facing, for example?
  • There is a worrying shortage of skills in the renewable energy sector, so much so that 75% of hiring managers are considering professionals from other sectors to fill the gap. We look at the factors that have led to this situation, and consider the opportunities for surveyors.

Also this issue:

How can we make the built environment professions more open and diverse? We speak to some of the change-makers who are already leading by example, including Constructing Rainbows director Sharon Slinger FRICS; past RICS president Amanda Clack FRICS and Bola Abisogun FRICS, founder and chair of DiverseCity Surveyors

And we meet three inspiring educators: Professor Matthais Hank Haeusler, director of computational design at the University of New South Wales; Alison Watson, the creator of the Design Engineer Construct! (DEC!) programme for secondary schools; and Professor Mona N Shah FRICS; dean of RICS School of Built Environment at Amity University in India, who are transforming built environment education with new ideas, innovative teaching methods and bold new approaches.
