Update on Sustainable Design

The imperative to design more sustainable buildings comes not just from legislation and regulation, but from the changing demands of building users – both in residential and commercial contexts.

Lifecycle costing shows the importance of considering the cost of running a building at the design stage, as well as understanding the environmental impact of choosing particular materials or construction techniques.

Adrian Campbell (associate director, buildings at ARUP) considers:

  • the shifting legislative context
  • the importance of the user in reducing overall emissions
  • how data is being harnessed in design and building operation
  • timber and offsite construction
  • understanding the interaction between building and infrastructure
  • case studies.
